14 July - Inaugural blog

It's a now beautiful winter's day, and I'm sitting at my kitchen table, writing my first blog. I'm taking my 5 minute scheduled break from working (I work remotely on Monday's for a Sydney Funds Management company).

I'm pondering what my kids are doing in their day-care and hope that Claudia, the youngest, is o.k. It's been two weeks and she hasn't cried. You don't know how that makes a mum feel (or dad for that matter). It's hard to say whether she puts it on, or that in her world, it's a huge deal for her to be separated from her Mum or Dad.

Anyway, what's got me onto this blog, is reading the article in the SMH about Olive. I'm awe-struck that someone of 108 was blogging to the world. I think there's something in that for other generations who say an old dog can't learn new tricks. Olive proved that theory wrong, didn't she. I was also overwhelmed to think that Olive had lived through a depression, two world wars and the most amazing technological boom that I've ever seen. Honestly, my life-time (so far) is not as impressive.

I'm a 37 year old working mum (and wife) who has seen flares come and go and come back again (what's with that anyway), the rival of the VW and the mini, let alone all those average bands from the 80's who feel they must regroup. I've seen two Bush presidents take on Iraq, for a reason they are still trying to justify, it just doesn't seem as "wow" as Olive. Mind you I'm a long way off 108. Which makes me ponder the question, "Should we stop and marvel at the small things more often?"

For so long I've heard that famous line, Don't sweat the small stuff, but have we taken this too literally at all facets of our lives? Sometimes I think so. As society develops, I see we are wanting more for less and wanting now. We've become very impatient. I know for one thing, I'm trying to slow down a little more, even as society ramps up. I think for me (and the family), it's time to enjoy the happy moments a little more.

Anyway, that's 5 minutes and I have to get back to it. I'll keep you all posted.
